What SalonShield covers.

Purpose-built coverage for salons, day spas & aesthetics risk — not a generic policy with your industry type as a footnote.

Professional Liability (Beauty & Aesthetic Services)

Covers claims alleging that a beauty or aesthetic service caused harm — chemical burns, allergic reactions, skin damage, injectable complications, laser treatment injuries, or adverse outcomes from cosmetic procedures. Standard GL does not cover professional service errors — this coverage does.

General Liability

Covers bodily injury and property damage — slip-and-falls in the salon, damage to client property, and third-party injury claims on your premises. The coverage your lease and state cosmetology board require.

Product Liability

Covers claims arising from beauty products used or sold in your salon — adverse reactions to shampoos, conditioners, color, wax, and skincare products. Product liability is typically included in GL but worth confirming for salons with retail product sales.

Commercial Property

Covers salon equipment, styling chairs, mirrors, reception furniture, inventory, and leasehold improvements. Equipment breakdown coverage protects against electrical failures in styling equipment and HVAC — downtime in a busy salon is expensive.

Workers Compensation

Required in California for all salon employees — stylists, estheticians, nail technicians, and reception staff. Chemical exposure, repetitive motion injuries, and slip-and-falls are the most common WC claims in this trade.

Medical Aesthetics & Injectable Coverage

Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser treatments, and body contouring require specific professional liability endorsements not found in standard salon GL. Medical aesthetic procedures carry higher per-claim exposure than traditional beauty services — and require carriers experienced in this class. SalonShield is structured for both traditional beauty services and non-surgical aesthetic procedures.

Real Risk. Real Examples.

Situations your policy needs to be ready for.

A client suffers a chemical burn from a hair color treatment and files a professional liability claim against your salon.

Professional liability is what responds — not your general liability policy, which covers premises incidents, not service errors. Chemical burns from color, relaxers, and keratin treatments are among the most common professional liability claims in the beauty industry. GL alone is not enough.

A client with an undisclosed allergy has a severe reaction to a product used in a facial treatment.

Product liability and professional liability both apply here — the product caused harm, but the treatment decision was also involved. A SalonShield advisor structures coverage so both exposures are addressed. The cost of one serious allergic reaction claim with hospitalization can exceed the annual cost of professional liability coverage many times over.

A client slips on a wet floor near the shampoo bowls and breaks her wrist.

General liability responds to this premises injury. Slip-and-falls near wet stations, reception areas, and restrooms are the most frequent GL claims for salons. Wet floor signage helps in defense, but coverage is what pays the claim.

Regulatory & Contractual Requirements

What your contracts, licensing body, and partners actually require.

California Board of Barbering & Cosmetology
The California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology licenses salons and individual practitioners. While the Board does not mandate specific insurance coverage, commercial lessors and business lenders typically require proof of GL and professional liability as a condition of the lease or loan.
Facility Leases
Salon leases in San Diego County typically require GL at $1M per occurrence, the landlord named as additional insured, and increasingly professional liability. Strip mall and shared retail leases may require higher limits. Bring your lease to your advisor call.
Booth Rental Agreements
If you rent booths to independent stylists, your rental agreement should specify the minimum insurance each renter carries — and you should verify those COIs annually. A gap in a booth renter's coverage can reach your salon's policy. SalonShield advisors help structure both salon owner coverage and booth renter guidance.
What We Can't Place

Operations outside SalonShield's current market.

Being specific about what we cannot do is part of being useful.

Medical spas with physician-supervised injectable or laser procedures
Medical aesthetic procedures fall under PrecisionCare (our dental & medspa program) with different underwriting requirements.
Salons with more than three professional liability claims in the last 5 years
Multiple prior professional claims affect eligibility significantly. Talk to an advisor.
Tattooing and body piercing (as primary services)
Tattoo and piercing studios require a specialty market. We can refer appropriately.
Electrolysis as the primary or sole service offered
Electrolysis requires a specific professional liability market. Discuss with an advisor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Salons, Day Spas & Aesthetics insurance questions, answered plainly.

What insurance does a salon need in California?
A California salon typically needs general liability, professional liability for beauty services, product liability, commercial property, and workers compensation for all employees. Salons with booth renters should confirm how their coverage interacts with the independent professional model. A SalonShield advisor will review your salon model and identify gaps.
Does general liability cover a chemical burn from a hair treatment?
No — general liability covers premises incidents (slip-and-falls, property damage) but not errors in professional service. A chemical burn from a color treatment or relaxer is a professional liability claim — a service error, not a premises incident. Professional liability coverage is what responds. This is one of the most common coverage gaps we find in salon accounts.
I rent booth space to stylists — am I responsible for their professional liability?
Not directly — booth renters are independent contractors responsible for their own professional liability. But if your salon's name appears in a complaint or lawsuit, your GL policy may be the first call. You should require proof of professional liability insurance from all booth renters and verify COIs annually. A SalonShield advisor can help you structure requirements for your booth renters and confirm your own coverage is appropriate for the salon owner role.
Are nail technicians covered under a general salon policy?
Nail technicians should be covered under your general liability, and their professional services should be covered under your professional liability if they are employees. Independent nail techs renting stations are responsible for their own coverage. The chemical exposure in nail services — acrylic, gel, and UV lamp use — creates an occupational health concern for WC as well. Talk to a SalonShield advisor about how your nail services are structured.
What is the difference between professional liability and product liability for a salon?
Professional liability covers claims that your service caused harm — the stylist's technique or decision caused the injury. Product liability covers claims that a product caused harm independently of the service — a client reacts to a shampoo used during a wash, for example. Both exposures exist in salon operations, and both need to be addressed. A SalonShield advisor confirms your coverage addresses both.
How much does salon insurance cost in California?
Premiums depend on number of employees and booth renters, service mix, annual revenue, and claims history. A small salon with 3–5 employees might pay $2,500–$5,000 annually for GL and professional liability. Larger full-service salons or those with multiple locations will pay more. Use Pembroke EstimateIQ for a directional benchmark, then talk to a SalonShield advisor for real carrier pricing.
