Child care and preschool insurance built for California's licensed providers
Coverage that meets California Community Care Licensing requirements — and goes further, covering the staff, students, and situations that generic business policies overlook.
Child care operations we serve in our markets.
What Firstlight covers.
Built around the actual risk profile of California-licensed child care — not a generic business owner policy with a daycare label.
General Liability
The coverage California Community Care Licensing requires as a condition of licensure. Covers bodily injury and property damage arising from your operations, and satisfies the proof-of-insurance requirement for your CCL renewal.
Abuse & Molestation
Standard GL policies exclude claims alleging sexual, physical, or emotional abuse — by design. This coverage fills that gap, which is increasingly required by county contracts, licensing bodies, and facility landlords for any program serving children.
Professional Liability (Educators Legal)
Covers claims alleging inadequate supervision, failure to meet developmental standards, or negligent care that falls outside a standard GL policy. A parent claiming a child was harmed by poor programming is a professional liability claim — not a GL claim.
Workers Compensation
Required in California for any child care employee — including part-time aides, substitutes, and kitchen staff. Coverage must reflect the actual classification of child care work, which carries meaningful injury exposure. We work with carriers experienced in this class code.
Commercial Auto & Van Coverage
Field trips, pickup routes, and transportation of children require commercial auto coverage. If staff use personal vehicles, hired and non-owned auto coverage is what protects your organization when their personal policy's limits run out.
Commercial Property
Covers your facility, classroom equipment, playground structures, educational materials, and furniture — against fire, theft, vandalism, and covered perils. Includes business interruption if a covered loss forces temporary closure.
Situations your policy needs to be ready for.
Late pickup is one of the most common sources of both CCL complaints and liability claims. If an incident occurs during that window — a fall, an allegation, anything — it will be evaluated against Title 22 staffing requirements. Your GL policy covers the liability. The licensing consequences are a separate fight. Firstlight advisors understand how California CCL responds to these situations.
This triggers two separate processes simultaneously: a CCL investigation that can result in licensing action, and a potential civil lawsuit. Standard GL policies exclude abuse and molestation claims by name. Without A&M coverage, the center is defending that lawsuit out of pocket. With it, the carrier defends and pays within policy limits.
This mismatch is discovered at contract renewal — two weeks before funding disbursement. The county requires corrected certificates before releasing payment. Firstlight structures A&M limits to match what county and state contracts in San Diego and Southern California actually require, not a guess at what might be enough.
